Extract of Reishi and Joint Inflammation

For over 2,000 years, Reishi extract has been used as a "cure-all" herbal remedy in Chinese Medicine, with the oldest written record of any medicinal mushroom in Shen Nong's Herbal Classic. Although it may not be totally accurate to claim that Reishi extract cures everything, traditional as well as modern use indicates that it may be a powerful anti-inflammatory agent in a large host of conditions, including arthritis.

While researching scientific papers in preparation for this article, seventeen out of nineteen presented positive results in using Reishi extract to treat inflammatory conditions. This appears to validate the traditional use of the herb in China, where it has long been used as an analgesic, and prescribed to treat inflammation and arthritis. Only two studies out of the nineteen that are referenced for this article showed inconclusive results. Both of those studies were conducted at the same institution. (1,2)

Regarding anti-inflammatory properties in general, a study out of India (2003) demonstrated that Reishi decreased inflammation in cases of acute or chronic edema by 56% and 60% respectively. (3) An earlier American study (1993) had already shown that, water extracts of G. pentaphyllum and G. lucidum [Reishi] were found to possess significant anti-inflammatory activity. (4) In the references are seven additional papers listed which all conclude that Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) possesses potent anti-inflammatory qualities. (5,6,7,8,9,10,11)

Next we'll be looking at some studies that more directly relate to the use of Reishi extract with arthritis. A paper published in 2006 by Blum et al. claimed to provide supporting clinical evidence demonstrating that use of Reishi extract for joint health was both safe and effective. (12)

The same year, another study summarized findings that Reishi in combination with a Chinese herbal remedy known as San-Miao-San demonstrated a positive "immunomodulatory effect" on rheumatoid arthritis. (13)

The mechanism through which Reishi achieves this beneficial effect on arthritis was suggested in a study the following year, 2007, by Ho et al., which states that GL-PP [Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide peptide] significantly inhibited the proliferation of RASF [Rheumatoid Arthritis Synovial Fibroblasts] (14)

Several additional papers have been published that summarize positive results in the use of Reishi against arthritis. (15,16,17) One even states that Reishi compares favorably to prednisone, albeit without side effects. (18) On the other hand, a separate study found that supplementing with Reishi helped balance the side effects of prednisolone* that were experienced by some patients, including protein in the urine and cell toxicity. (19) (Prednisolone is the active compound of prednisone, which gets broken down by the liver and converted to prednisolone.)

In conclusion, the findings of 17 out of the 19 scientific papers referenced for this article agree that Reishi can help support joint health in cases of arthritis. However, it is important to always consult a licensed medical practitioner before using any herb for medicinal purposes, and to never change the use of existing prescription drugs without talking to your doctor about it first.

Note on name confusion: The name "Reishi" is Japanese for the perennial tree mushroom that American naturalists refer to as "Varnished Conk." In China, it is known as "Ling Zhi." All these names usually refer to the species Ganoderma lucidum, which for the sake of distinction from other types of Reishi may sometimes be called "Common Reishi" or "Red Reishi."

Several closely related species of Ganoderma also go by the name of "Reishi". Most common of these are the Hemlock Reishi (Ganoderma tsugae) found on Hemlocks in the Appalachian Mountains, and the Chinese species "Black Reishi" (Ganoderma sinense). My Real Life Acai Berry Juice Test

If you've ever watched Oprah or Rachel Ray, chances are you might have heard one of them talk about the aci berry. And since I'm one of their biggest fans, I definately saw those shows. So I decided to try them out and test the benefits for myselft. Well, what a letdown my first experience with acai berry juice was.

I was disappointed to say the least. How could Oprah and Rachel Ray be raving about this super fruit magic berry without even mentioning the possibility that it might, as my first taste test guinea pig put it 'taste blecky'? I may have something to do with the fact that I did indeed choose the most inexpensive option available, but at $2.39 for 8oz, it is not what I would consider cheap.

As you have gathered, after that first try, I decided that a taste test was in order, and I promptly lined up 3 unsuspecting household members. If Oprah and Rachel Ray love acai, there must be some redeeming taste on top of the health benefits, so I figured I just got unlucky with my first choice.

The next day I headed out to find a sufficiently varied selection of acai juices available within walking distance of my house. This task took all morning, and I found there were a wide range of options, ranging from the atual real pure acai berry juice at $80 per litre which you are only supposed to have 2 tablespoons of, and which is very bitter, (I did NOT purchse this by the way, are you kidding?), to various colorfully packaged health drinks with different juices and concentrations of acai berry juice. Here's what I found:

1. Nova Acai made in Brazil. Cost: $2.39 for 250ml/8.4oz. Contains purified water, naturally organic acai puree, organic evaporated cane juice, citric acid. Nutritionally 120 calories per container, 3.6g of fat 1.3 of which are saturated (6% of your rec. daily intake) and 39% of rec. daily intake of Vitamin C.

2. O.N.E Amazon Acai made in Brazil. Cost: $3.99 for 330ml/11oz. (Note: I think I saw this exact brand at another store for $2.99) The ingredients listed are 100% natural acai, 100% natural acerola, organic evaporated cane juice, citric acid, guarana extract, xantham gum, and lecithine de soya. Nutritionally 157 calories per container, 3g of fat 1 of which are saturated (5% of your rec. daily intake) and 167% of rec. daily intake of Vitamin C.

3. mySmoothie Superfruit Acai made in Sweden. Cost: $2.79 for 250ml/8.4oz. Contains: apple juice, crushed banana, 11% acai berry, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Nutritionally 150 calories per container, 2.25g of fat .03 of which are saturated (less than 1 % of your rec. daily intake) and 39% of rec. daily intake of Vitamin C.

4. Happy Planet extreme purple made in Canada. Cost: $2.99 for 325ml/11 oz. The ingredients listed are pure apple juice, banana puree, peach puree, acai berry puree, blackberry puree, orange bioflavanoids, green tea powder extract, ascorbic acid and beta carotene. Nutritionally 130 calories per container, 0g of fat .0 of which are saturated (less than 1 % of your rec. daily intake) and 150% of rec. daily intake of Vitamin C.

5. Arthur's Acai plus made in Canada. Cost $3.29 for 325ml/11oz. The ingredients listed are berry puree blend (acai, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry, cherry) apple juice, banana puree, pear juice, lemon juice. Nutritionally 230 calories per container, 4.5g of fat, 1g of which are saturated (5 % of your rec. daily intake) and 40% of rec. daily intake of Vitamin C.

At the end of our very official quality controlled taste test, we were all suprised at how similar the results were - the consenses ended up with 3 juices in the 'that's pretty tasty' category, and 2 in the 'please don't serve that to me for breakfast' category. The latter sentiment, which was unanimous by the way, were unfortunately reserved for the two Brazil juices(Nova Acai and O.N.E. Amazon Acai), which are also the juices with the highest acai content. To be fair, after the official testing, one of the judges diluted one of the Brazil juices with orange juice and it improved so much that it could be considered a palatable option.

Of the three 'good' juices, all the judges deemed that they were very tasty and had 'good fruit juice' qualities. The clear winner out of our selection was Happy Planet Extreme Purple - it recieved top scores in all categories of taste, consistency, and appearance, although mySmoothi Superfruit Acai got a first place score from one of the judges. A solid second place was earned by Arthurs's Acai Plus - made in Canada.

So on taste alone, Happy Planet Extreme Purple seems to be the winner. It seems as though the Brazilian juice, which has the strongest concentration of acai, is also the least favorite. You'll have to use your best judgement here, and decide whether you will get an acai juice (blend) that tastes great, or go for a more concentrated version and flavor it yourself. - 17274

It's amazing to me how many people have never thought about how much time they should be spending in the gym. They simply pick a random number of times to visit a gym each week, and sometimes they end up overdoing it.

The training turned out to be pretty basic, and I spent some time wandering around the gym to get to know the different equipment. I noticed several people show up several days in row, and they even bragged to me about how much muscle building workouts they would do in a single day or week.

I've learned a few things about weightlifting, and I've also come to understand some mistakes among beginners. Over training is one of those common mistakes.

There are many symptoms of over training which result when your body experiences total exhaustion in the gym. When you work your body too hard for too long, your entire body will begin to suffer for it.

I'm not saying this will happen right away, but you need to get to know your body and how much rest you need. Even if you don't end up getting sick, you may be sabotaging your muscle building efforts by working out too often.

The idea here is that you have to give your muscles rest because that is when they actually grow. Weightlifting stimulates the muscle, but the actual growth will occur afterwards.

One way to tell if you have been doing too much weight lifting lately is to record your progress. Ideally, you should be able to increase the weight slightly during each new session. If you can't do this, or if you can't even repeat your previous load, you're probably overdoing it.

The bottom line is that you need to be cautious and take care of your body. When it comes to weightlifting, learn as much as you can about all aspects including the recovery phase. The right amount of rest can actually boost results and keep you healthy. - 17274
