What You Don't Know About Acai

By Rand Francis

If you have been reading any health magazines for a while, you are not likely to miss hearing or reading about acai. The acai berry has been in the news, featured in many TV shows such as in Oprah, featured in best selling books such as those by Dr. Nicholas Perricone and mentioned by many celebrities such as Rachel Ray. Many people have vowed that they will always live by the acai berry to save them from unbearable aches and pains.

Most people already know that the acai is healthy but many do not know how healthy exactly or what it contains. Some people think that it is similar to blueberry or other berries which have high antioxidants. If they are more serious about healthy foods, they may learn about the ORAC value and find that the acai berry is supposed to have the highest ORAC value among fruits and berries.

When people mention the acai, they often refer to the berry. An acai fruit is a berry, not a vegetable or other types of fruits. Some people do not even know that the acai is natural. They think that since it is so good, it cannot be natural. Since they usually do not see the acai fruit in the supermarket, they think that it is not a fruit. The acai berry is found deep in the swamp areas of the rain forests hidden away and hard to reach.

Another thing people might not know is that the type of trees that grow the acai berries are palm trees. These are large and tall trees deep in the rain forests. The name for this type of palm tree is Euterpe oleracea. Each acai palm tree can product up to 20kg of acai fruits a year.

Nowadays, people are aware of the importance of antioxidants which is why many people eat blueberries and other berries. The acai berries are supposed to have much more antioxidants than other fruits and vegetables. In fact, in 2005, there was a research finding published about the acai berry that says that it was excellent against peroxyl radicals, good against peroxynitrite and poor against hydroxyl radicals.

The antioxidants are not the only thing that got people interested in the acai berry. The anticancer property of acai berry may have even more people talking. The University of Florida research in 2006 came at the right time when people are concerned about cancer. The research found that the acai berry killed parts of the cancer cells. That means, there is hope in the acai berry to the cure of cancer.

Even with our little knowledge of the acai berry, the health benefits of it has amazed the world and has made many people want to try some. This is good news of all manufacturers that can produce fruit juices based on the acai berry. - 17274

Should you believe those bodybuilding magazines?

By Jon Cardozo

Building muscle can often be a difficult and confusing task, since there's so much conflicting information out there. Naturally, someone starting out often looks for the perfect guide to building that muscular physique.

Many times that source will be the magazine shelf at any number of bookstores. Bodybuilding magazines are quite popular and often inspire a beginner to try to reach new heights.

Though the pictures can be intimidating sometimes, many novice bodybuilders find the magazines exciting and take much of the information to heart. This can cause a major problem when it comes to choosing supplements to help build muscle. Did you know that many magazines actually own or are owned by supplement companies?

Even when there is no direct affiliation between the magazine and the companies advertising their supplement products, there still seems to be a conflict of interest since the magazines rely on these advertisers. Advertisements, along with subscription fees, are how magazine companies make their money after all.

The real problem with this is that many beginners don't know any better and try to follow everything they read in these magazines. Sometimes they don't figure this out until after they have wasted a lot of time, effort, and money.

This brings us back to a critical concept of bodybuilding which tells us that supplements should not be the basis for a muscle building program. A few supplements can be useful for the advanced trainer who is trying to maximize his gains and has already developed a solid weightlifting and diet program.

Before wasting your money on some unnecessary supplements, you must take some time to educate yourself about the foundations of bodybuilding. Gradually increasing your resistance training and focusing on your nutrition is the foundation, not a bunch of expensive and often useful supplements.

How do you learn these fundamentals of muscle building? Well, hiring a personal trainer can be pretty expensive, so that may not be the best option for you. Nevertheless, there are some good courses online that can teach you what it takes to build muscle naturally. - 17274

Is The Cookie Diet The Real Deal

By Ron C

The cookie diet may take the cake as the world's most awful ever fad diet. In essence this diet states that amino acids baked into cookies can control hunger.

Fad diets seem to be everywhere these days. In general a fad diet is a diet which is designed to last for short periods of time, during which large amounts of weight can allegedly be lost. Most fad diets center on some super weight loss food, much like the cookie diet centers on the cookie. These diets rely on slick pitches that make it seem silly not to buy and try the diet.

The cookie diet was created by a physician named Sanford Siegel in 1975 while he was researching a book on the effect of natural foods on hunger. This cookie diet consisted of patients eating six cookies each day in place of meals, then eating a reasonable dinner. All told the daily caloric intake was about 800 calories. Very quickly the cookie diet became a huge success, with 14 clinics in Florida and 10 in Latin America expounding this amazing weight loss formula. It wasn't long before over 200 doctors were regularly recommending the cookie diet. The clever doctor came out with soups and shakes that also contained the amino acids needed to control hunger.

There is another version of the cookie diet referred to as the Hollywood cookie diet because it became popular with many Hollywood stars. The diet benefited from the media efforts of all the stars who tried it to lose weight. This diet is similar to the original in that it consists of a cookie for breakfast, a cookie as a snack in the morning, a cookie for lunch, a cookie as a mid-afternoon snack, and then a reasonable dinner. These cookies each contain 150 calories and fiber, protein and minerals.

If you're thinking of the cookie diet take Donnie Brasco's advice forget about it. Eat less, exercise more that's the formula for good health. In general this is a much healthier way to lose or maintain weight than relying on some fly by night miracle food, even if it is endorsed by someone you recognize from a movie. - 17274
