Colostrogenesis: The Formation of Bovine Colostrum

Colostrum is formed in a pregnant cow about 3-4 weeks before calf delivery. Fluid containing growth factors and other substances are released into the mammary tissue that is currently being developed. Hormones, such as progesterone, regulate this process. The hormones attach to cell receptors which line the mammary gland and prevent the glands from secreting any fluid throughout the pregnancy. About 2 weeks before calf delivery, these hormones assist in the appearance of specific cell receptors which line the mammary gland. These receptors help transfer substances from the pregnant cow's blood into the mammary gland. Some of these substances are necessary antibodies, growth promoters and growth hormones which help in the development of the baby calf.

2 days prior to the birth of the baby calf, the hormonal balance in the mother cow changes; many secretions are produced as well as the mammary tissue combines multiple substances together. When the calf is born and the placenta is eliminated, the progesterone levels in the mother cow decrease dramatically. Additionally, the protein-based substance lining the mammary gland is stopped so there are no additional substances transferring from the mother's blood into the mammary gland. Colostrum is the cumulation of fluid in the mammary gland at the birth of the baby calf. Thus, Colostrum is rich in milk fat, low in lactose content, contains a high concentration of protein, mainly antibodies, as well as a high concentration of hormones such as growth promoters and metabolically active substances.

After the mother cow delivers the calf, the removal of fluid from the mammary gland creates an abundant amount of secretion from the mammary gland. This replacement fluid is called transitional milk and will be different from the original fluid secreted from the mammary gland at birth. Another reason this replacement fluid is different from the original fluid is after birth the mother cow begins to reabsorb the fluid that is in the mammary gland. The highest quality of colostrum is collected in the first milking within six hours of the calf's birth. The first milking contains the highest concentration of biologically active substances and nutrients.

While the colostrum in the mother cow are changing quickly after the birth of the calf, the baby calf is undergoing a number of changes in its body. Within the first six hours of life, the calf's stomach lining does not produce any acid and there are a limited number of enzymes which break down proteins that are ingested.

Therefore, these conditions work in favor of having the biologically active substances in complete colostrum pass through the calf's stomachs into the upper portion of the small intestine without being broken down. During the first 6-8 hours of life, an area in the upper duodenum has specialized sites where the biologically active substances can be absorbed and transported directly into the calf's bloodstream. After this period, the stomach begins to acidify, enzymes appear and the specialized absorption area in the small intestine changes dramatically so that most of the biologically active substances in colostrum are no longer absorbed. This process is aided by the fact that calves are born with a well-developed system of lymphoid tissue under their tongue and at the back of their throat that persists throughout their entire life. Risks For Back Pain

Can there be risk factors for back pain? And, if there are, what can I do to keep myself healthy and well? Your chiropractor can help answer these questions and more.

One primary risk factor relates to exercise. Everyone has heard, "if you don't use it, you lose it". If you're not exercising regularly, your back muscles are deconditioned and much more susceptible to injury - the strains and sprains we're accustomed to calling "back pain".

Muscles get stronger when they're required to do work. Also exercise helps "train" the soft tissues around a joint - the ligaments and tendons - these supporting structures "learn" how to withstand mechanical stresses and loads without becoming injured. Basically, when you exercise - when you do any kind of exercise - your body gets "smarter" and you're less likely to get those annoying back problems.1

A related risk factor is weak abdominal muscles. When you were a kid, at some point one of your gym teachers probably told you to "suck in your stomach". It turns out that was pretty good advice. Your abdominal muscles support the muscles of your lower back. If your abdominals are weak or if you're not using them - letting them hang out and droop instead of keeping them activated - your body weight has to be held up by the muscles of your lower back. They're not designed to do that - they're designed to move your spine around. And eventually, these lower back muscles will give way under the excess strain. The result is a very painful lower back injury.

There are many easy-to-do exercises for your abdominal muscles. The key is to actually do them - and do them after you are finished doing the rest of whatever exercises you've scheduled for that day. How often? Three times a week is plenty. Abdominal routines are quick - no more than 10 minutes. And, remember to use your abdominal muscles throughout the day. Imagine your abdominals are being pulled in and lifted up. This is not a "tightening" - your thought should be "activate". Your body will know what to do, once you've started adding consistent abdominal training to your exercise routine.

Learning about potential risk factors and taking appropriate action will help ensure a stronger, more flexible, and healthier lower back.

3. By making my own, I get to know and decide what goes into it. No preservatives or additives. The kids get less high and I'm not worried that I am filling them up on crap.

4. I know so many people, my kids friends especially with allergies of all sorts. I can leave them out of the ice cream, so everyone get to enjoy it.

5. I bring my ice cream over to friends, or families houses for dinner. It beats spending a fortune on flowers. I bring along the dessert which we can all enjoy together.

6. I get the kids involved too. They love it and sometimes bring their friends over especially to make ice cream. It's great on a rainy day when they are hanging around the house looking for trouble.

7. For me it can be a great way of getting in some sneaky nutrients into their diet. They love fruit on their ice cream in funny shapes, I sprinkle nuts over it, and I even sprinkle oats on it sometimes.

8. I try most of the time to make it lower fat than you buy. I use half and half or light cream instead. Great for the kids, but helps me and my diet out too.

How Diet and Exercise Effects Fibromyalgia

I have spent a considerable amount of time and research related to ones diet and how it can affect health. In fact, Ive written several articles on diet as it relates to specific illnesses.

Since, there is not much research when it comes to diet and fibromyalgia. I have focused primarily on the feedback I have received from my clients.

While my program has shown them the most promise of relief for their Fibromyalgia symptoms, many, if not most, stated that also a key was the change in diet.

Fibromyalgia is a disease which affects both the muscles and connective tissues. Its main symptoms are chronic pain in these areas in addition to extreme pain when touched even gently.

Other symptoms include: extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances including bruxism (tooth grinding), hard time breathing and swallowing.

Fibromyalgia has also had a long history of not being accepted as an actual medical condition by many doctors. So many times my clients have written to me telling me their doctor told them, Its all in your head.

While that's an infuriating thing to read, let alone hear in person from a doctor who is supposed to care, recent studies suggest that could actually be the key. While no known organic cause can be found, many are now starting to believe that fibromyalgia is in fact a psychological condition.

That's not to say that these are imaginary symptoms of pain. In fact, this same research indicates that those who suffer from fibromyalgia have a heightened sense of pain, meaning, those of us who normally don't register stimuli as pain, will register it if we suffer from fibromyalgia.

It follows a pretty common sense approach as far as diet goes. The main foods to avoid are: chocolate, coffee, alcohol, foods high in salt, fried foods, high fat foods, white flour or sugar, carbonated drinks, Nutrasweet or saccharine and tobacco (although not technically a food).

Keep in mind that this is a preventative approach " avoid foods that can further suppress an already suppressed immune system (like alcohol). Avoid high fat foods which are known to cause lethargy. Avoid fried and high salt foods which can cause the body to swell, and lead to further pain.

Breathing and relaxation exercises are also recommended. Be careful though, with exercise. Overdoing it can actually trigger painful symptoms. I highly recommend my Fibromyalgia program. Its results have been amazing!

Concern about vitamin D should not lead people to forego sun protection, but rather prompt a conversation with their physician about how to ensure adequate and safe vitamin D intake while guarding against skin cancer."

Organic Garden Fertilizer " How to Worm Compost

Vermiculture is the fancy word for worm excretion which is worm compost. Heres how to do your own worm composting.

Purchase a Container

You will need a container at least 8 to 12 inches deep. Wood is better as it absorbs moisture and insulates the worms. A rectangular plastic container is often used, but the compost tends to be soggy.

Have Plenty of Holes in the Bottom

After choosing your container, you must now drill holes for release of excess moisture as well as for allowing air flow. Each hole should be at least two inches apart from the last and spread across the entire bottom. Once this is completed, place the container on some bricks to keep it off the ground. This step allows for the air to flow around and through the container. Another bonus to this step is that a tray can be placed underneath the container to catch any excess fluid which can then be used as liquid fertilizer. If you notice your compost seems excessively wet, simply add more holes to the bottom.

Line with Newspaper

Place newspaper that has been shredded into one inch wide strips and has been dampened with water from a spray bottle into the bottom of the container. Next, simply add about one cup of sand. The sand assists the worms with digestion.

Save Kitchen Scraps

Just as you would save leftovers for your home composting, you will need to save your kitchen scraps for your worm compost. This should be started at least one week prior to purchasing your worms. The best foods are egg shells, used tea bags, coffee grounds and raw fruit and vegetable leftovers. The foods you want to avoid are meat, bones, cheese, milk or mayonnaise and salad dressings.

Purchase Your Worms

You will need to have at least 2 pounds of worms for each day of food waste. Surprisingly, this works out to be approximately 2,000 worms. The best variations for composting are red worms or red wigglers as they thrive off of organic materials such as rotting fruits and vegetables.

Cover the Container

Worms like it dark and moist, so cover with a wooden board when outside. This will also keep away predators. Inside, heavy plastic will do.

Collect Castings from Worms

It takes about 4 to 6 weeks to notice the bedding is darker and in 2 to 3 months there will be little left to the original bedding. To collect all of the castings or compost at once, empty the bin on a tarp or old shower curtain into piles. Shine a light so the worms go to the bottom. Scoop the castings off the top until only worms are left. Start your bins over with some of the castings in your new bedding. - 17274
