All right, so you want to get physically fit at the gym, and lift heavy weights. If only weight lifting were as simple as pumping the weights up and down.

Nutrition plays a very large part of recovery and growth. Bodybuilding diets are constantly changing due to the increase of your muscle mass, if you put muscle on you have to eat more, if you lose muscle you need to eat less. So how do you keep an eye on what is happening inside the body?

The first is to monitor your weight to see if your goal to put muscle on is causing an increase in bodyweight. If the scales show that weight are staying the same or going down then its time to look at the diet and eat more. If the weight is going up because your stomach is getting bigger then you are eating too much. But be cautious, you can expect to put some bodyfat on when trying to put muscle on, but you want to monitor that the dreaded fat isn't going on to much.

Using body fat calipers is a great technique to assess whether muscle or fat is increasing. You can use the calipers every other week. If muscle seems to be going down according to your calipers, that is the evidence that you are not eating enough good nutrition. If the calipers reflect that the percent of bodyfat is increasing then you will have to consume less.

Decent gyms should offer a set of calipers, which should give you true readings as to the results as long as you ensure the same person takes measurements each time. Using the callipers and finding the millimeters and your bodyweight you can use the chart and find the percentage bodyfat you have.

If you get yor bodyweight in pound and then multiply it by the percentage of bodyfat, that will give you your total bodyfat. Total bodyweight less the resulting figure will equal one's fat free mass. Although the figure has organs and muscle we use the entire model for the calculations including organs and bones.

You should record and keep the figures you calculated for total body fat and for fat free mass. When you have your measurements taken you can check to see if the percentage of bodyfat has increased. If you do the correct exercise and eat correctly then your body fat will go down. And with the decrease of body fat, you will find that your muscles and fat free mass will go up. If you are not eating correctly you will discover that your fat free mass, muscle is decreasing and the bodyfat is increasing. - 17274

Dining out is a big part of many people's lives. Maybe you're eating out more frequently because you entertain clients. Perhaps you don't like eating out. In every restaurant you find these 3 things to avoid at all costs, and here they are:

Eliminate these major culprits and you can skip the food sources (for the most part) that do the worst damage to your body - trans fats, refined vegetable oils, processed starchy carbohydrates, and refined sugars.

Ok, so what do you need to do? Well, this means you should try to skip the cheap white bread, cut out the french fries that come with every single sandwich on every menu known to man, and wipe out all of the huge portions of pasta and rice that are often loaded on the plates as well.

Instead, just try to order meat and side vegetables, and a salad, asking for the vegetables or salad as a substitute for the typical french fries, pasta, or rice, that most restaurant meals come with.

Almost every restaurant I have ever been to will always allow me to change to vegetables or side salad for the regular french fries or chips that almost always come with burgers or sandwiches.

Just a quick side note, it amazes me how many people scrutinize my substitutions of veggies for fries by telling me that I am 'not living' because I refuse to eat deep fried french fries... are you kidding me! If french fries are your idea of 'living it up', you need to get a better hobby!

Ironically, these same people are the first to complain that they are fat, overweight and have tried 'everything', yet can not lose their big guts. I am not sure why so many people think eating deep fried foods equals 'living it up'... I am for moderation with many things, but there are 2 things that should be totally removed from every diet because these foods are simply dangerous... it is sodas and fries!

Take a look at the difference a simple substitution makes between choosing smart and doing what most people do...

Most people will eat a meal out such as this:

* soda or other sweetened drink (and no, diet sodas are NOT healthy!) * Burger or sandwich or burger * chips or french fries

A MUCH smarter alternative if you care about your body and health is this simple change:

* Burger or Sandwich * Salad or veggies * unsweetened iced tea or water (no diet drinks -- unless you like to drink poison!)

Make these 2 simple substitutions and save at least 400 - 900 calories every time you dine out... AND you are cutting out the most harmful foods to your body as well by avoiding the evil trans fats of deep frying foods and high fructose corn syrup from the fries and soda.

Here's a side note: a little-known way to eat full portions of pasta, rice, and breads and actually get away with it without packing on the body fat is to make sure to schedule a high intensity full body resistance training exercise (can be free weights or body weight training) BEFORE your scheduled meal time.

Sometimes it can be really hard to fit the exercise into your schedule right before the meal, but if you can, the meal can be your 'post-exercise meal'. After a high intensity resistance training workout, your body can handle a higher amount of carbs than normal to help replenish the muscle glycogen depletion you had during the intense exercise.

Your typical moderate cardio workout will NOT cut it for this... it must be high intensity resistance training workout to deplete enough muscle glycogen to handle restaurant portions of carbs.
