Things You Should Know To Start A Lower Cholesterol Diet From Dr. Sam Robbins

By Dr. Sam Robbins

A bowl of oatmeal, a handful of walnuts or a baked potato topped with a heart healthy margarine may be enough to lower your cholesterol to a healthy level and keep you off medications.

To reduce your low density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol, you should eat oatmeal since it contains soluble fiber. Some of the foods that have soluble fiber are kidney beans, apples, pears. psyllium, barley and prunes.

You can reduce the absorption of cholesterol in your intestines by eating foods with soluble fiber. Your total and LDL cholesterol can be decreased by eating ten grams or more soluble fiber a day. You would get 6 grams of fiber from eating 1 cups of cooked oatmeal. Adding fruit like bananas will add another 4 grams of fiber. Cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran gives you fiber as well.

To reduce your blood cholesterol you should eat walnuts according to research. You can keep your blood vessels healthy and elastic with you eat foods such as walnuts that are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Almonds and other nuts produce the same effect, however, only eat a handful because nuts are high in calories.

According to researchers, you can lower your cholesterol by eating fatty fish that has high levels of omega 3 fatty acids. You can help your heart by eating omega 3 fatty acids which will lower your blood pressure and the risk of blood clots.

To get heart healthy benefits it is recommended by the Food and Drug Administration to eat 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day. You can get olive oil into your diet by adding it to a marinade, by using it to saute vegetables or mix it with vinegar as a salad dressing. When you are basting meat use olive oil rather than butter. Olive oil contains a potent mix of antioxidants that can lower your "bad" (LDL) cholesterol but leave your "good" (HDL) cholesterol untouched.

Food items such as margarines, orange juice and yogurt drinks can reduce LDL cholesterol by more than 10 percent because they are fortified with plant sterols. By drinking two 8 ounce glasses of sterol fortified orange juice a day gives you the needed 2 grams of plant sterols.

Cut back on the types and amounts of fat you eat before you make other changes in your diet. You can improve your cholesterol levels and overall health by not eating fatty foods. - 17274

Article 19: Still Going on the HCG Diet

By Amelia Handley

It's Day 7! One week down, right? I feel like I've reached a milestone in my HCG weightloss system. I've done alright so far. In my first week on the diet I lost 6 pounds. And since the average is from 1 to 2 pounds per day I figure I'm on track. There's room for improvement, but I'm on track.

Yesterday when I weighed myself I went up so when I weighed myself this morning I was happy that I went down. I'm at 162 pounds. Down two pounds from yesterday. I'm feeling like that's pretty dang good. I'm officially at the one pound per day average.

I took the HCG and my B-Total that came with my HCG weightloss system first thing after I weighed myself. (I've been keeping my scale right underneath my bed because my 9 year old daughter started to get obsessed with weighing herself throughout the day. I didn't like her sweet little self to worry about her weight so I hid the scale). I'm not sure if that was a logical reaction or not, but it just seemed like she SO didn't need to worry about it; especially since she's an adorable, skinny little thing.

Regardless of why...I like that the scale is underneath the foot of my bed. It's so easy to whip it out first thing and weigh myself. I haven't forgotten yet. And I figured I would forget sometimes because I'm definitely the forgetful type. I'm not that big on the whole "daily routine" thing that people are always bragging about and saying is so wonderful. It sounds kind of boring to me.

So at lunch I took the HCG and then prepared one of the cookbook's recipes: Turkey Burgers. The ingredients were ground turkey, green onions and seasonings. And something about the combo was just perfect once it was done and I wrapped it in lettuce leaves instead of the traditional bun. If you're thinking about trying the recipes...this is a good one to start with. It was absolutely easy and tasted great. It was my protein and vegetable. Then I added Melba Toasts and a grapefruit and I was all done for lunch.

I remembered to take my HCG before I started dinner. I had the last of my leftover chili with some crackers and an apple. I made the kids something else and it was kind of funny because they both wanted my chili. I, of course, would only share a bite because I couldn't have anything else. So I'll have to make it again next week and make enough for them to have some, too. Apparently that's going to be a new family staple. - 17274

TMJ Pain and TMJ Exercises

By Bart Icles

It can be quite annoying to suffer from TMJ disorder. Not only does this disorder cause great pain, it can also be tricky to diagnose. TMJ disorder has a wide range of symptoms and many of these symptoms are observed away from the jaw joints. This makes it difficult for medical professionals to determine whether a person is truly suffering from TMJ or if that person is suffering from some other medical condition. Nevertheless, there are several experts you can turn to if you suspect that you are suffering from TMJ disorder. These experts can recommend ways on how you can lessen the pain brought by TMJ and how you can rid yourself of such a condition. There are lots of ways of treating TMJ and TMJ exercises are among the most popular methods of treatments.

TMJ exercises do not require you to do any fancy movement or use any expensive equipment. All you need is a room or space where you can be comfortable and few minutes each day. You might be surprised at how simple the exercises might be and you will even be more surprised at how effective they can be in lessening the clicking and popping in your jaw joints, relieving you of the pain you feel, and realigning your jaw joints.

Depending on how severe your condition is, there are some exercises that you can do at home. To be sure that you will not be aggravating your present condition, you can seek help from your doctor. Most exercises for your jaw joints will require you to face a mirror so you can observe your jaw as you move it. In doing so, you will need to open and close your mouth in a slow manner. If it is moving from side to side, you might want to proceed with exercises for your jaw joints.

Simply opening and closing your mouth slowly, evenly, and smoothly can already help much in keeping your jaw joints in their proper alignment. While this kind of exercise might appear to be simple, this can be quite difficult to do if you are really suffering from TMJ. What is good about this exercise is you can do this practically anywhere as long as you are free from distractions.

There are still tons of TMJ exercises out there that can help you relieve yourself of TMJ pain. You can learn more about these exercise in home medical books, health and fitness journals, and in several websites that discuss TMJ disorder and TMJ treatment. - 17274

Travel Can Be A Pain In Your Back

By Dr. Jason Fowler

Traveling can be rough on the body. Whether you are traveling alone on businessor on your way to a sunny resort with your family, long hours in a car or an airplane can leave you stressed, tired, stiff and sore.

"Prolonged sitting can wreak havoc on your body," says Dr. Scott Bautch, immediate past president of the American Chiropractic Association's (ACA) Council on Occupational Health. "Even if you travel in the most comfortable carrier and opt to fly first class, certain pressures and forces from awkward positions can result in restricted blood flow. One of the biggest insults to your system from prolonged sitting is the buildup of pressure in the blood vessels in your lower legs. Contracting and relaxing the muscles can help to get the blood flowing properly."

Dr. Bautch and the ACA suggest the following tips and advice to fight the pains and strains of travel before they occur.

Warm Up, Cool Down Treat travel as an athletic event. Warm up before settling into a car or plane. Cool down once you reach your destination. Take a brisk walk to stretch your hamstring and calf muscles.

In the Car Adjust the seat so you are as close to the steering wheel as comfortably possible. Your knees should be slightly higher than your hips. Place four fingers behind the back of your thigh closest to your knee. If you cannot easily slide your fingers in and out of that space, you need to re-adjust your seat. Consider a back support. Using a support behind your back may reduce the risk of low-back strain, pain or injury. The widest part of the support should be between the bottom of your rib cage and your waistline. Exercise your legs while driving to reduce the risk of any swelling, fatigue or discomfort. Open your toes as wide as you can, and count to 10. Count to five while you tighten your calf muscles, then your thigh muscles, then your gluteal muscles. Roll your shoulders forward and back, making sure to keep your hands on the steering wheel and your eyes on the road. To minimize arm and hand tension while driving, hold the steering wheel at approximately 3 o'clock and 7 o'clock, periodically switching to 10 o'clock and 5 o'clock. Do not grip the steering wheel. Instead, tighten and loosen your grip to improve hand circulation and decrease muscle fatigue in the arms, wrists and hands. While always being careful to keep your eyes on the road, vary your focal point while driving to reduce the risk of eye fatigue and tension headaches. Take rest breaks. Never underestimate the potential consequences of fatigue to yourself, your passengers and other drivers. In an Airplane Standup straight and feel the normal "S" curve of your spine. Then use rolled-up pillows or blankets to maintain that curve when you sit in your seat. Tuck a pillow behind your back and just above the beltlineand lay another pillow across the gap between your neck and the headrest. If the seat is hollowed from wear, use folded blankets to raise your buttocks a little. Check all bags heavier than 5-10 percent of your body weight. Overhead lifting of any significant amount of weight should be avoided to reducethe risk of pain in the lower back or neck. While lifting your bags, stand right in front of the overhead compartment so the spine is not rotated. Do not lift your bags over your head, or turn or twist your head and neck in the process. When stowing belongings under the seat, do not force the object with an awkward motion using your legs, feet or arms. This may cause muscle strain or spasms in the upper thighs and lower back muscles. Instead, sit in your seat first, and using your hands and feet, gently guide your bags under the seat directly in front of you. While seated, vary your position occasionally to improve circulation and avoid leg cramps. Massage legs and calves. Bring your legs in, and move your knees up and down. Prop your legs up on a book or a bag under yourseat. Do not sit directly under the air controls. The draft can increase tension in your neck and shoulder muscles. Safe Travel For Children Always use a car seat in a car when traveling with children below the age of 4 and weighing less than 40 pounds. Ask the airline for their policy on child car seat safety. Car seats for infants and toddlers provide added resistance to turbulent skies, and are safer than the lap of a parent in the event of an unfortunate accident. Make sure the car seat is appropriate for the age and size of the child. A newborn infant requires a different seat than a 3-year-old toddler. Car seats for infants should always face the rear. In this position, the forces and impact of a crash will be spread more evenly along the back and shoulders, providing more protection for the neck. Car seats should always be placed in the back seat of the car-ideally in the center. This is especially important in cars equipped with airbags. If an air bag becomes deployed, the force could seriously injure or kill a child or infant placed in the front seat. Make sure the car seat is properly secured to the seat of the vehicle and is placed at a 45-degree angle to support the head of the infant or child. - 17274
