Effects Of Dihydroxyacetone In Tanning Lotions

By Julia Suarez

Using self-tanning lotions for the first few time can be quite difficult because it can have adverse effects on the skin like streaking of the skin or orange coloring of the palms.

Once you get the hang of it however, these self tanning lotions come in quite handy especially during the summers.

How To Apply Lotion Correctly

Misapplication of self tanning lotions can have amusing results and this does commonly occur with people. Its not so much a problem that has to do with the product rather it is the technique that is being used to apply the lotion that is faulty.

What is DHA?

Self tanning lotions have a chemical called Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. This chemical produces uneven marks on the top-most layer of the skin after an hour or so of its application.

This particular strata is known as stratum corneum. Hence if you start off on the wrong feet with the application of the product then chances are you will not be able to stop this fast pace process from having its affect on your skin.

Avoid streaking

Misuse of such tanning lotions may lead to weird streaking of the skin that looks like that of a tiger skin covered with dark and light stripes. Care has to be taken to prepare the skin initially to overcome such reaction.

Before applying lotion

People generally do not realize the harmful effects that a tanning lotion can cause to the skin. Precautions have to be taken like moisturizing and exfoliating the skin before you apply the self tanning lotions. Any sort of carelessness can lead to streaking.

The best way to avoid the streaking is to exfoliate your skin every morning in the shower prior to applying the tanning lotion. The exfoliating product should be used a number of days prior to the use of the tanning lotion and not just before it

Men can also shave a couple of days ahead of the tanning process as it is another way of skin exfoliation. The intervals, however, needs to be similar to the time used for exfoliating by other means.

Be slow & gentle!

When it comes to the real act of applying the tanner then you need to be extremely gentle to begin with. Work your way slowly making sure you rub the product into the skin completely. - 17274
