What is the Best Way for Teens to Lose Weight?

More and more teens are presenting as overweight and obese. It is becoming an epidemic that is putting a strain on medical resources not to mention making many young people quite unhappy.

If you look at the average teenager's diet, you really won't be surprised why many of them are overweight. It is a steady stream of fast food junk.

And so the quest for free weight loss programs for teens continues. Well, it is possible to lose weight without spending a fortune.

Any good weight loss program for teens must not prey on an adolescent's desperation to shed pounds. It must also not set unrealistic goals. What it should consider is that a teenager is still growing and developing.

As they are still developing, calorie intake should not be too limited. No drastic diets please! Such dieting can have serious effects to their health.

A free weight loss program for teens should be well thought-off and planned. It should first consider a teenager's existing regular diet and activity level. Only from here can it make diet and exercise recommendations.

As already stated, some teenagers do not have the healthiest of diets. Many of them subsist on nothing more than junk food. If this is the case, then the first thing that has to go is the junk food.

Switch to a balanced diet of vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and fruit. For better all-around weight management and health, these should replace the steady stream of chips, fries and deep dish cheesy pizza.

In fact, this does not mean no burgers or pizza ever. If these are prepared using healthy ingredients - lean beef burger patty, whole grain bread buns with light cheese - anyone could lose weight. Another important thing though is moderating portion size.

The next step towards finding a free weight loss program for teens, is to make sure that there is plenty of regular exercise that goes along with it. That means getting the heart and lungs pumping and working at least three or four times per week for at least twenty minutes at a time.

However, the teen that does not like hitting the gym or jogging should not be forced. There are plenty other activities that can get their hearts pumping. Look for the ones that appeal to them. It is the only way they will commit to doing the exercise.

And dont discount daily activities. Going for a vigorous walk a few times a week is already considered adequate exercise. So why not let them walk to school? Whatever the exercise taken, it should be done willingly, otherwise it may not be done regularly.

Finally, do not set your teen up for failure. Look for a program that sets doable, realistic goals. Take things a step at a time. Encourage them to stick to the plan. Failing too many times may get demoralized and making it harder to lose those extra pounds. - 17274
