Increase Vertical Workouts

By James R Puta

Would you be a better athlete if you were 6 inches taller? For most sports the answer is yes. Since you can't control how tall you are, you need to focus on jumping higher because you can control that. You simply need to find the right jumping program to increase your vertical leap.

How do you go about learning to jump higher? You have to have the right combination of leg strength and leg speed. The strength is very important for more reason than one. You need strong muscles and tendons to be able to absorb the intense impacts associated with jump training.

When you want to work on speed you need to start what are called plyometrics. These are exercises that will be based on jumping to produce more fast twitch muscle fibers in your legs. But that's not the only thing that they do, they also train all the muscle fibers to fire at the same time.

To product power you want the muscles to fire as close to the same time as possible, and this is why some people jump higher than others.

What are some plyometric exercises that you can do to jump higher? You will become very familiar with plyometic boxes in any jump program. You will jump onto and off of them many times. The key is to only touch the floor for as little time as possible. This is what's going to train your muscles to react faster.

Jumping squats are one exception to the rule where you allow your feet to stay in contact with the ground for more than a split second. And this is because it trains your legs as well as your speed in one exercise.
