5 Height Statistics That May Surprise You

By Rodney Williams

It's also fascinating to study statistics and try to find connections between different things, and the reasons behind them. This is no different with height. As we slowly begin to understand more and more of the factors which play a role in shaping height, the statistics which were previously unclear begin to make more sense.

1) Height by Region - This has been one of the most looked at areas concerning height. With entire regions of the world having significant height advantages over other areas, it seemed like the most obvious way to find the link between height and the factors which affect it. So what is causing this fluctuation in height between different regions?

Genetics of course plays a role, and if a nation has taller people than another, it seems only natural that they'll continue to be taller. This doesn't explain why they became taller in the first place, but that question is difficult to answer without detailed statistics from hundreds or thousands of years ago. Factors we do know that influence height are namely the aforementioned genetics, as well as nutrition. Whether we'll learn more in the future, such as possible environmental effects, isn't known.

2) Growth Spurts - Growth spurts are often quite dramatic, and quite a shock to the people on the outside observing the growth spurt first hand, namely parents. Girls, who hit puberty slightly before boys, can grow as much as 3.5 inches per year, while boys can do them one better by growing as much as 4.5 inches per year during their growth spurt.

3) Family Ties - As mentioned, it's long been theorized or suspected that genetics plays a large role in height, to the point that a widely accepted scale for possible height based on the height of other family members has been adopted.

For males, the formula works by adding the height, in inches, of your parents, and your four grandparents, dividing it by 6, multiplying that number 1.08, and then adding an additional 3.5 inches. The formula is similar for females, except they multiply their accumulated number by 0.92, and add 2.5 inches.

4) Height in the Workplace - Taller men have a 75% better chance of being selected for promotion or an executive position than shorter people with the same credentials. Proof that height is often associated with power and successful individuals.

5) Height in Love - Finally, there's also a definite connection between height and romance. Women specifically tend to desire taller men more so than men do of women. Women who described themselves as physical fit or athletic were much less likely to want a shorter man, while larger women, who conceivably would have fewer options were more willing to date a short man.

By region and race, Asian women are the most forgiving of small statures, partially as a result of their own small frames. Black women, generally the tallest women in the world, were also the most demanding of their partners being tall.

These are just some of the many fascinating statistics that surround height, in our culture, our workplace, and even our bedrooms. - 17274
