Hemmoroids: What Are The Causes And Ways For Prevention?

By Jack Bennington

Many people suffer from hemmoroids. In fact, there are around 10 million sufferers in the United States alone. If you are one of them, you may benefit from understanding more about what they are and how to prevent them.

Hemorrhoids form when veins become swollen. If the swollen veins are inside the rectum, they result in internal hemorrhoids. If outside, in the anal area, the resulting hemorrhoids are external. The symptoms experienced will depend on which type of hemorrhoid you have.

Internal hemorrhoids do not normally present with pain. These usually present with blood that is bright and red in color. Usually you notice this after going to the bathroom. If you experience this symptom, you should make an appointment with your doctor to be sure that there is no other condition present.

When hemorrhoids are of the external type, on the other hand, the main symptom is going to be pain as well as itching. These symptoms will be felt when the area is irritated such as when passing stools or cleaning the area. If the hemorrhoid is large enough, even sitting can be painful.

The veins become enlarged when there is an unusual amount of pressure on them. This can happen when one has either diarrhea or constipation due to the excess strain. Pregnancy is also a common cause of hemorrhoids, due to the pressure the baby puts on the veins in the pelvic area. The process of childbirth then makes the condition worse.

Other things believed to lead to hemorrhoids are obesity and sitting for excessive lengths of time. High blood pressure can be another factor. Obviously any condition that results in constipation can be said to be the underlying cause of the hemorrhoids.

Prevention includes making sure you have enough fiber in your diet so that you do not get constipated. If you are overweight, a program focused on weight loss can be of aid. Improving the tone of the muscles in the area is also a good idea. Try to avoid wearing restrictive clothing that can irritate the area surrounding the anus.

If you have a tendency to constipation, you may want to take a daily nutritional or herbal supplement to help. Or, at the very least, have it handy in case you have a flare-up. Make sure you are always drinking plenty of water as well.

External hemorrhoids are usually fairly easy to treat at home. First, of course, are the dietary measures to relieve constipation if present. Witch hazel or another astringent applied topically can help. There are also over the counter hemorrhoid medications that can be used, either in ointment or suppository form. A warm bath can also help relieve the irritation and pain and aid in shrinking the hemorrhoid.

The same measures for relieving constipation can be applied when the hemorrhoids are internal. If severe enough to need further treatment, your doctor has several options including cutting off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. This can be done by using elastic bands or suturing, for example. There are also natural remedies than may be considered. It is best to avoid surgery unless necessary.

It is natural to be embarrassed when you have hemmoroids. But there is no reason to live with the symptoms. Try some of the many ways to prevent and treat them today. You may not even have to leave your house to start getting relief. - 17274
