Don't Just Live With Gynecomastia!

By Dustin Fennell

Man boobs may be nothing more than gynecomastia--a medical condition that several young boys go through when they hit puberty. Many men also go through it again when they get older. Though it's not fully understood, it is caused by hormones releasing and reacting when they shouldn't. It's natural to have hormonal imbalances at these changes in life when your body is shifting rapidly. It still doesn't make it any easier to live with, though, and if you do have gynecomastia, or pseudogynecomastia, then you have options.

You may think you have man boobs, but it could really be your breast tissue having a strong response to hormones if your body is undergoing a change. Your tissue and glands will swell and make it look like you have breasts. Though it is not an easy condition for men to live with, it is understandable why it happens when one's body is going under so much hormonal change and stress.

Everyone has both estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen is more prominent in females and testosterone is more prominent in males. But when your body is changing rapidly, the lower amounts of hormone could come to the surface. Pubescent girls can often develop masculine qualities like unwanted hair, while boys can grow breasts. It make puberty that much more difficult.

Not all enlarged pectorals are a result of this condition, though. Some men are over-weight and this is reflected in their whole body, including their breasts. But men can suffer from both of these conditions. So how can you tell which one you have?

Because gynecomastia is hormonal and may make breast tissue expand more rapidly than by gradual weight gain, a man's breast tissue may be tender, as are the developing breasts of teenage girls or pregnant women. The nipples can be puffy if gynecomastia is involved and exercise will effect no change in the size of the breast tissue because their largeness has nothing to do with weight loss or gain.

While 'man boobs' are merely fat deposits in over-weight men, gynecomastia is a glandular issue. So if your breast tissue is out of proportion with the rest of your physique or if you lose weight yet the man boobs remain, you probably have gynecomastia.

As with any medical condition, it varies from individual to individual and has several sub-groups of classification. It can be so severe it looks like elephantiasis. It can only make your nipples swollen. It can be asymmetrical and affect only one pectoral. Body builders suffer through much of this because their extreme body changes and steroid use can trigger hormonal problems. They also have problems if they decide to reduce their muscle levels and let some of their bulk go away. When the muscle goes slack, it could look like they have sagging man boobs. This is not gynecomastia.

Treatments, just like the condition, can be light or severe. There are many different options to fit the conditions. The most average one is light hormone therapy and different medications subscribed by your doctor. Some even use radiation. Liposuction is for the chronic, hard-core patients who are unaffected by hormone therapy. This can be very expensive and usually it does not just stop with liposuction; body re-shaping and scar management often follow. - 17274
