Fast Abs Workout - Using Unstable Surfaces

By Dan Solaris

Recent surveys show that over 60% of the people in the Western world are overweight and suffering from a potbelly. Surely the availability of tasty take-out food 24/7 is a big factor. The food industries in the developed countries have been hugely successful in producing a surplus of rich and delicious grub accessible to anyone that gets the munchies.

As such, there are even more people caught up in the battle against the bulge and a lot of them are losing. Despite this being the age of information, a significant number of people trying their hand at getting lean still don't know proper way of working-out for fast abs.

Crunches and sit-ups are the most common exercises that figure-conscious people do to develop their abs. Doing these exercises on a flat, even surface is usually the norm, but there's a way more effective method of doing a fast abs workout and that is exercising the core muscles with the use of round or unstable surfaces.

Giving the core muscles a fast workout using an exercise ball or a balance plank is still quite uncommon across the world, but it's arguably the most effective in conditioning the abs. Having strong core muscles enables the body to be more stable and have more balance.

Because our spine is structured in a curved position, doing ab exercises using a curved surface like a Swiss ball will enable a wider range of motion and hence more muscular effort. This equates to a greater amount of calories burned by our system and a faster abs workout.

A test using electromyography was done to determine the difference between normal flat-bench crunches and sit-ups to ones done on a curved surface. The results were clear- a way higher percentage of muscle fibers of the midsection were being utilized in core exercises on a curved, unstable surface.

Another reason exercising with the use of an exercise ball or a balance plank makes for a fast abs workout is because the unbalanced surface entails more muscle effort. While we're trying to balance on a round surface, the other core muscles like the transverse abdominis and the lower back get into the action- expending more calories from the work.

Another reason employing unstable surfaces makes for a more effective abs workout is because they're more fun exercises to do. Boredom and monotony is the main reason people find it hard to exercise consistently- resulting in slower or minimal gains. - 17274
