Healthy Foods to Eat: Three to Improve Overall Health!

By Angela Brunno

What kind of decisions do you make for your family when it comes to their diet? Are you making the best decisions possible? This can be a challenge for any person and any family because we are often bombarded with food options that are often unhealthy. Even worse, many foods claim to be healthy, but really are not that healthy.

People used to look toward nature and to specific healthy foods to cure ailments and disease. Today we often look for man-made drugs to fight off illness. When I first became pregnant, I became more and more interested in eating more healthy and making sure I had the best diet possible for me and my growing child. I realized that many foods could help increase my energy during pregnancy and breastfeeding and that many foods could aid in helping me lose the baby weight. I also realized that in choosing healthy foods to eat I was setting a good example for my children.

There are many healthy foods to eat that can reduce certain symptoms, lower risks, or eliminate ailments. Did you know that flax oil can help with ADHD and salmon and sardines with depression? Did you know that certain types of nuts have been shown to aid in weight loss for women?

It is a fact, you can improve your life by choosing certain foods that can provide the same benefits of man-made medicines. Acai, hazelnuts, and barley are just three, among others, that you can add to your diet. They can improve how you feel, improve your immune function, and help fight off sickness. They are considered actual "power house" food choices.

Acai contains many antioxidants and has been shown to help protect the immune system from physical stress. It comes in juice or frozen pulp form, as it cannot be imported in actual berry form. Grown mainly in Brazil, it is a food staple in Amazon communities.

Containing an array of beneficial antioxdents, hazelnuts are another food that can strengthen the immune system and keep it strong. Hazelunuts are also high in Vitamin E and other phytonutrients that aid in the bodies ability to repair itself. There are many ways you can use a hazelnut: put them into stir-frys, into baked goods, sprinkle on salads or in yogurt, and even add to morning pancakes!

Barley is a third healthy food to eat. While you may associate barley with beer-making, it actually has been a food staple for 10,000 years. Barley can aid in immune function and it also has cholesterol-lowering properties called beta-glucans. Barley can be used in a variety of ways, most notably in soups; however, you can grind it into flour and use for baking, make a hot cereal out of it, or just simply add it to stews and salads.

Acai, hazelnuts, and barley are three foods you can add to your diet. They may make you feel better, help fight off common ailments, and benefit you nutritionally as well. Your local grocery or health food store should carry all of the items as well. - 17274
